Transfer Station Change Letter
October 14, 2025
Town of Geneseo
Transfer Station Notice
Effective January 1, 2026
Dear Community Members,
Due to changes in the recycling industry, recyclable material removal at the Geneseo Transfer Station will now cost the same as garbage disposal. The Town is now required to charge for recyclable disposal to reflect these updated costs.
Beginning January 1, 2026, and in addition to the annual transfer station permit, users will be required to purchase $20 punch cards, which will be used for both recycling and garbage disposal.
Why This Change Is Necessary
- Global Market Shifts: International regulations and reduced demand have decreased the market value of recyclables, leading to higher processing costs.
- Rising Operational Costs: The expenses associated with sorting, cleaning, and transporting recyclables now equal—or exceed—those of garbage disposal.
- Contamination Challenges: Non-recyclable items placed in recycling bins increase processing expenses and can render entire loads unusable.
These factors have aligned the costs of recycling and garbage management. To help keep recycling viable in our community, please:
- Avoid contamination: Rinse containers and recycle only approved materials.
- Reduce and reuse: Choose reusable items whenever possible.
- Stay informed: Check for current transfer station guidelines.
For questions, please contact the Town Clerk at townclerk@geneseony.org or call (585) 991-5000.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we continue working together to maintain a sustainable waste management system.
Sincerely,
Town of Geneseo
William Wadsworth, Supervisor
